+    * 烏腳病為一種末梢血管硬化造成四肢壞死的疾病，因其從腳部開始變黑並且向上蔓延猶如黑蛇一般，故又被稱為烏乾蛇。
+      * 當時烏腳病流行在嘉義布袋、義竹及台南的北門、學甲一帶，主要是因沿海地帶淺層土地含鹽量較多、不適合取得可飲用的淡水，故當地居民將井打深，取用深井水作為日常所需，而後研究證實這些深井水所含「砷」高達0.4-0.6ppm，遠超過臺灣所訂0.005以下的標準。當地居民除了腳，手也會逐漸出現壞死現象，只能透過內科止痛及外科清創、截肢來治療。
